Choosing Window Treatments
Many people think of window treatments as a finishing touch when designing a room. Savvy designers will tell you otherwise. Window treatments should never be a last-minute decision. They should be one of your priorities when choosing aesthetic elements for your space. Instead of thinking of window coverings as icing on the cake, consider them one of the main ingredients.
Window Treatments Will Stand Out
Your entire interior decor scheme can be altered by your window treatments. Pairing shutters with drapery panels will give your room a tailored sophistication. A simple Roman shade, on the other hand, will give a casual and streamlined aesthetic. Your window coverings are a factor you want to consider while creating the room’s look and feel, not an item you hope fits in once the room is nearly complete.
The Do’s
- The first rule of choosing new window treatments is to view the room as a whole from the beginning. Try to take a step back, view the space as a whole, and think about how you will make your vision a reality. Failing to include your windows at the onset of the design phase can leave you with a room that feels disconnected and unorganized.
- Consider the natural light in the room. When it comes to blocking light–or not blocking it–there are endless options for any scenario. You may love the woven shades that gently filter light in your friend’s home, but your space may have expansive windows that will cause a glare on your TV when the sun is setting. You’ll have to decide if you want to block, filter, or control the natural light. This will give you a solid starting point to choose which shades or blinds will meet your needs.
- Think about what the purpose of each room is, and what will happen there. You may realize you need specific window treatments. You may love the look of classic drapes, but if your home has windows facing the street, or neighboring homes, you’ll want a window covering that offers light and privacy. A sheer shade would be ideal for this situation.
- Don’t be afraid to accommodate your home’s architectural features. Some homes have features that won’t allow for rods hung above windows, or slanted ceilings that limit your selection. You may have to stick with blinds or shades that are available with an inside mount, and that’s fine.
The Don’ts
- You don’t want to go with a completely different look in every room of your home. We aren’t suggesting identical window coverings throughout your home, but consistency in design style will create a flowing, cohesive look in your home.
- Another thing to avoid is putting your style preferences before practicality. You may be tempted to go with your favorite fabric or look, but there’s no getting around a window treatment by the sink getting wet. You’ll also be displeased if the rising sun wakes you at 6am on the weekend.
