Common Mistakes When Choosing Window Coverings

An outstanding window treatment can pull a room together and be a focal point of any room. Choosing window coverings, however, can be confusing and overwhelming. At Shelly’s Interior Concepts, we want to assist you in choosing the perfect window coverings for your home. Like all things, mistakes can happen, so here are some mistakes to avoid when choosing your new window treatments.

No Coverings at All

Sometimes the sheer number of options can leave you feeling so overwhelmed that you can’t choose. However, leaving your windows bare is never the right decision. Not only do you lack any privacy, but you also lose the temperature control benefit provided by window treatments. Since windows are frequently the focal point of a room, leaving them bare can make the whole room seem unwelcoming and bare.

The Wrong Hardware

The hardware for your window coverings is just as important as the coverings themselves. You want an attractive, cohesive look, and plain, mismatched, or inappropriate hardware can detract from that. If the fixtures in your room are bronze, a brushed chrome hardware setup will look out of place. The hardware needs to match the overall decor of your room. Sleek, modern hardware will not be a good fit for a rustic room. Choosing inappropriate hardware that doesn’t support the coverings will at the least look messy, and at the worst damage your walls when the hardware falls.

Form Over Function

Imagine you have found a fabric that you love and you’re thinking up throw pillows, upholstery, and, of course, window treatments. Before you have the same style of covering created for multiple rooms, consider the function of each room. Is it a room for sleeping? If so, you will want window treatments with a room-darkening capacity. Do you want total privacy in the room, or would you like natural, diffused light? We can help you turn your favorite fabric into dream window coverings for multiple rooms.

Improperly Measured

This is one of the most common mistakes, and why we are happy to do the measuring for you. Fabric window coverings look sloppy if they are too long, and odd if they are too short. If you opt for blinds or shades, too much length will leave them bunched at the top when raised or hanging to the floor when lowered. There’s never a time or place when window blinds touching the floor is a good look. If your blinds are too narrow there will be haps at the sides which negates any privacy you hope for them to provide.

Choosing the Best Material

Another factor to consider is whether the material you have chosen is a good fit for the room. If you’ve fallen in love with natural wood shades but put them in your bathroom you can expect to need to replace them quite soon. Moisture, heat, and humidity will damage natural wood. Coverings for your kitchen should be easy to clean so maybe woven wood is not the best choice. Our design team can help you find something you love for every room that will also blend with the purpose of the room.

The Big Picture

You will usually see your windows from inside your home, but passersby will see the outside, so you want that view to be attractive, as well. Try to keep a similar theme going throughout all your rooms. If that is not possible, use a white shade on all windows so your home has a cohesive look from the outside.
