Window Treatments for Small Spaces
With tiny homes and minimalist styles being so trendy these days, you may be wondering how people make small spaces work, both aesthetically and functionally. Our professional design team has put together a list of ways you can use window treatments to brighten up small spaces.
Placement Matters
Most people are accustomed to hanging curtain rods very close to the frame. This is a design snafu that can be easily remedied. Try placing your curtain rods high and wide to enlarge the look of the window, and the entire room. Rods should be a few inches below the ceiling and extend between 12-18 inches on either side of the window. This way the curtains will actually frame your window instead of just taking up the space inside the frame.
Stick with Sheers
Lighter colors reflect light, making any space appear more open and airy. This is also true for window treatments. Thick, heavy drapery will obscure what natural light you have, and make your space seem smaller. Sheer shades provide daytime privacy and an abundance of natural light. Using lightweight, sheer window coverings in shades of white and cream will give you a fresh look that works all year long.
Bathroom Basics
Finding the perfect window treatment for a small bathroom can be tricky. You want privacy, of course, but you also want an abundance of natural light. Choosing a custom Roman shade with a statement print will draw the eye to a source of natural light, while also letting some enter the room. Roman shades provide an uncluttered look that is perfect for smaller rooms. Roman shades can be raised a little or a lot depending on the placement of your window, and the amount of privacy you need.
Other Small Space Solutions
Horizontal blinds are great for small spaces. They can accommodate nearly any size window, large or small, and allow for plenty of variable light control. Another option is a roller shade. These window treatments give a clean, sleek, minimalist look and can be made to complement any style decor. Cellular shades are another great choice. Cell shades are a window treatment of many talents providing privacy, insulation and a reduction in glare. If you’re looking for the most bang for your buck, cellular shades are a solid go-to.
