Hitting the Right Height

You may think the height of your drapery is of no major consequence, but it does make a significant difference. If your drapes are hung just above the window trim, you may not be taking full advantage of your space! The general rule of thumb is to hang the curtain rod halfway between the window frame and ceiling, and to measure for new window treatments with that placement in mind. Hanging drapery high helps draw the eye upward to create the illusion of greater height. This is particularly useful in rooms that have low ceilings - but it makes an even bigger impact in rooms with high ceilings as well.

Width Considerations

You can easily create the look of wider windows by extending the rod at least four inches beyond each side of the window frame. Since your drapes will usually be open during the day, this will also eliminate any stack back from hindering your view of the outdoors. You can extend the rod up to 10 inches beyond the window frame, depending on your space. Any further and you risk an awkward, out of place appearance.

Choosing a Fabric

With the right fabric, drapes can look fantastic in any room. Select a thicker fabric, such as velvet, for drapery in formal settings. More casual rooms, like living rooms or dens, will look great with cotton or linen drapery. You can always pair your drapery with other window treatments, such as blinds or shades for enhanced light control and privacy. And above all else - feel free to disregard and place your window treatments wherever you like! Design rules can be broken to create dynamic, eclectic design!

Drapery Dimensions

Design Studio™ Side Panels & Drapery are a perfect fit for any window in your home. Even windows that look identical can have minor differences that can affect the final look of your drapes, if they’re not accounted for. In most rooms, your drapes will look best if they break at or brush the floor. To achieve this length, measure from the top of the curtain rod to the floor and reduce the number by a half-inch. In more formal rooms your drapery can form a small puddle by adding two or three inches to the length measurement. Drapes are meant to have a full, elegant aesthetic, so make sure your panels are twice the width of your window.

Hardware

When you purchase custom Hunter Douglas drapery, your window treatments come complete with custom hardware. Select from a variety of luxurious finishes, including black, gold, and brushed nickel. All Design Studio™ fabrics are also available in cut yardage to create additional personal accents for your room.
