Questions to Ask When Buying Plantation Shutters

Are you interested in adding the timeless charm of plantation shutters to your home but know little about this popular interior window treatment? Shelly’s Interior Concepts has been in the business of upscale window coverings for more than 20 years, and we’ve learned a thing or two along the way. We want you to be delighted with whatever window fashions you go with, so here are some questions to ask when considering interior shutters.

Plantation shutters, Hunter Douglas, Heritance® Hardwood Shutters, interior shutters near Saint Michael, Minnesota (MN)

1. What type of wood are the shutters made of?

All wood is not equal, and wood shutters must be crafted using appropriate hardwood. Heritance® Hardwood Shutters are made using either poplar or basswood, both of which are top choices for wood plantation shutters. Poplar is lightweight and has a straight, even grain. Poplar trees can grow over 100 feet tall and are a plentiful resource in the United States. Basswood is one of the straightest hardwoods with a fine texture, tight pores, and an indistinct grain. These characteristics allow basswood to be easily sanded, stained, or painted with a consistently smooth, top-notch finish.

2. Should I go with wood or composite material for my shutters?

Wood is always our first recommendation for material because of its beauty and durability, but hardwood isn’t the most practical choice for every room. Rooms with a lot of humidity and moisture, like bathrooms or kitchens, will cause hardwood plantation shutters to warp and crack. In these rooms, we recommend NewStyle® Composite Shutters which are great for busy spaces or Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Shutters. The innovative compound used to manufacture our Palm Beach™ shutters is guaranteed never to crack, chip, fade, or warp even under the most extreme conditions - our Palm Beach Promise™.

3. What width should the louvers be?

Most of our customers choose the 3 ½ inch louvers because they are a good size for almost any window. However, 4 ½ inch louvers look stunning on more oversized windows and in modern decor-styled homes and have the added bonus of a better view-through.

4. What operating systems are available?

Your new shutters must work well with your home and lifestyle, so choosing the best operating system is a must. Fortunately, Hunter Douglas recognizes the importance of providing several options, and each one holds true to the brand’s premium quality. Heritance® Hardwood Shutters are available with five unique operating systems, including bi-fold track, by-pass track, and standard hinged panels. You can have Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Shutters with any of the operating systems available on the hardwood shutters, but your new poly shutters can also operate using PowerView® Automation or HiddenTilt™.
