Light-Filtering and Room-Darkening Shades

When it’s time to choose the right window treatment for your home, being able to control and manage light the way you want it is the most important factor of the shade. That’s why terms like “light-filtering,” “blackout” and “room-darkening” offer different distinctions to describe the amount of opacity for homeowners to make an informed decision.

If you’ve new to these terms describing the different opacities of shades, you may be unsure what they mean. Shelly’s Interior Concepts is here to help you by explaining the differences between light-filtering, room-darkening, and blackout shades and sharing the best places for each in your home.

What Are Light-Filtering Shades?

As their name suggests, light-filtering shades allow sunlight to enter a room and gently diffuse it throughout. Light-filtering shades come in different levels of sheerness.

In general, shades that block less than 95% of incoming light are light-filtering. Since they allow the most light and minimal privacy, light-filtering shades are an excellent choice to pair with drapes or shutters.

Details About Room-Darkening Shades

Room-darkening shades are a compromise between light-filtering and blackout shade styles. They block about 95% of light and reduce glare while providing privacy.

  • Room-darkening shades are helpful for video meetings in home offices.
  • Roller shades, cellular shades, and Vignette® Roman Shades in room-darkening fabric add an elegant, modern touch to spaces in your home.

Where Should I Use Blackout Shades?

Blackout shades feature tightly woven fabrics that block 99% of light, making them ideal for bedrooms, nurseries, and home theaters. Layering blackout shades under blackout drapery panels will provide maximum darkness, reduce exterior noise, and provide insulation. Duette® Cellular Shades with the optional LightLock® blackout system is an excellent choice for rooms that need the most darkness.

Which Type of Shade Do I Need?

Many Hunter Douglas shades, like Silhouette® Sheer Shades and Designer Banded Shades, offer more than one opacity. Both styles can filter light or provide substantial room darkening. Some shades, like Alustra® Architectural Roller Shades, have the Kickback™ feature that pushes the fabric at the top of the headrail closer to the window when you fully lower it to provide more privacy and room darkening. You can also choose a shade with a top-down/bottom-up design, such as Alustra® Woven Texture® Roman Shades, to enjoy versatile light control with a single opacity.

Options for Multiple Opacities

Many rooms have varying light control requirements, and Hunter Douglas offers several solutions to meet them:

  • Duolite®: A combination of a light-filtering and room-darkening shade on a single headrail.
  • Dual Roller: The dual roller design lets you hang any two roller shades on a window so that you can combine a sheer and blackout shade for the ultimate versatility.
  • A Deux™: Available exclusively with Silhouette® Sheer Shades, the A Deux™ system places a translucent sheer shade in front of a room-darkening roller shade.
