Shelly’s Guide To Sunroom Interior Design
A sunroom, enclosed porch, patio, three-seasons room, or hybrid indoor/outdoor space is an ideal space to relax and feel closer to nature. It also allows you to exercise your interior design muscles, and Shelly’s Interior Concepts is happy to help give some ideas for decorating these flexible and functional rooms.

Choosing Sunroom Furniture
Remember that sunrooms are meant to be open and airy, so choose your furniture accordingly. Avoid oversized pieces that will make the room feel cluttered and stuffy. Choose multifunctional furniture, like ottomans with storage, and space-saving items, like nesting tables. Natural materials, including wicker and rattan, deepen your sunroom’s connection to the outdoors. But materials like whitewashed wood, metal, and glass are other options to create an open and airy look in your sunroom.
Sunroom Flooring Options
The floor is more noticeable in your sunroom, so you must choose wisely. Natural materials like wood or stone are good options, but often require special care. Luxury vinyl plank, tile, and poured concrete are all surfaces that let you enjoy the appearance of your space—but these specialty surfaces aren’t easily damaged. An area rug or two will add softness and texture and pull the décor together.
Adding Greenery to Your Sunroom
Putting plants in a sunroom isn’t a requirement, but maybe it should be! Sunrooms are excellent areas where many plants thrive year-round. You're free to choose any plant that thrives in bright light and warmth, including:
- Air Plants
- Palm Tree
- Succulents
- Pothos
- Snake Plant
- African Viole
Make a Stylish Statement in Your Sunroom
There’s a fine line between bland and overdone interiors, and we help you walk that line. Statement lighting, like an overhead hanging fixture and lamps, partnered with a small water feature, will enhance the room rather than overwhelm it.
Utilizing the vertical space allows you to display photos or artwork on floating shelves or hooks for hanging baskets. If birdwatching is a hobby you enjoy, you can place bird baths and feeders directly outside, where they’re visible from the sunroom.
Sheer Shades for Sunrooms
Sheer shades are one of our favorite window treatments for sunrooms because they enhance natural light while protecting the space from sun damage.
Luminette® Sheer Panels
Luminette® Sheer Panels are an outstanding option for sliding glass doors. The delicate sheer panels rotate to provide a healthy combination of sun and privacy. Luminette® Sheer Panels are compatible as Whole House Solution™ when paired with other sheers, allowing for effortless horizontal and vertical window treatment coordination.
Silhouette® Sheer Shades
Silhouette® Sheer Shades feature S-shaped fabric vanes that appear to float between dual sheer panels. They’re available in over 150 fabric options, so you can have shades that blend in or bring colorful contrast. The vanes are available in three sizes, and the Silhouette Halo™ Window Shadings option has double fabric vanes for more precise light and privacy control. Luminette® Sheer Panels and Silhouette® Sheer Shades are compatible with PowerView® Automation so that you can move them with a remote, an app, or voice commands.
