Basic Elements of Dining Room Interior Design

  • Lighting: Statement lighting is a must in your dining room. You want to adorn your windows with eye-catching window coverings to create a mood in the space and highlight your windows. When it comes to other lighting sources, whether you prefer an opulent chandelier or an abstract pendant light, an eye-catching light fixture above the table sets the room’s tone. Layer the room’s lighting with lamps or wall sconces to avoid dark corners and create a pleasant atmosphere.
  • Art: Art gives your guests a glimpse of your personality and is a great conversation starter. The size of the piece is as impactful as the content. When hanging art on a large, blank wall, it should cover approximately two-thirds of the space. This rule is valid whether hanging a single painting or creating a gallery wall. If you’re using multiple artworks, leave two to three inches of space between them.
  • Storage: A sideboard provides a place for food, so you don’t have to make as many trips to the kitchen. You can also use it to store small items, like candlesticks, centerpieces, and napkins. If you don’t have the space for a sideboard, consider a cabinet or benches with interior storage.

How Big Should My Dining Room Table Be?

That is an excellent question! A table that’s too large will make it challenging to move around the room, while one that’s too small will look out of place. To find the ideal table size, measure the length and width of the room and subtract six feet from each measurement. If you have a 14’x16’ dining room, your table should be 8’x10’. You can always go a bit larger or smaller to meet your family’s needs with a table that includes leaves for extra space when necessary—like those big holiday gatherings or weeknight celebrations.

Selecting Window Coverings for Dining Rooms

Versatile window coverings ensure light control that reduces glare during the morning and evening. If you’re a traditionalist at heart, drapery will never disappoint; consider metallic hardware for a modern touch. Drapery is also an excellent window treatment for arched windows. You can hang it just below the arch to enjoy natural light without losing privacy or above it to elongate the wall and make the ceiling appear taller.

Pair your drapery with a secondary room-darking or light-filtering blind or shade for additional color and texture. Parkland® Wood Blinds have a timeless style and adjustable slats to create the ideal amount of light and privacy. Alustra® Woven Textures® Roman Shades are made from woven natural fibers and have a refined, transitional aesthetic that adds texture and elegance to your dining room.
